Credincioșii din Filipi au fost primii convertiți ai lui Pavel în Europa. Știm din Faptele apostolilor că el a vizitat acest loc de cel puțin trei ori - și de fiecare dată când se gândea la ei după aceea, îi aducea bucurie în inimă. Din remarcile sale din scrisoare reiese clar că exista o mare afecțiune între el și credincioșii din Filipi. Este pe departe cea mai personală și mai intimă scrisoare pe care Pavel a scris-o unei adunări.
