Die Philipper waren die ersten Bekehrten des Paulus in Europa. Wir wissen aus der Apostelgeschichte, dass er diesen Ort mindestens dreimal besuchte – und jedes Mal, wenn er danach an sie dachte, brachte es Freude in sein Herz. Aus seinen Bemerkungen im Brief geht klar hervor, dass zwischen ihm und den Philippern große Zuneigung bestand. Es ist der bei weitem persönlichste und innigste Brief, den Paulus an eine Versammlung schrieb.
