Nahum unterscheidet sich von Jona und Micha dadurch, dass er außer in seinem eigenen prophetischen Buch nirgends sonst erwähnt wird. Alles, was wir über ihn wissen, ist, dass er aus Elkosch stammte. Was das Datum der Prophezeiung Nahums angeht, so liefert uns sein Buch die Zeitspanne, wenn nicht sogar die genaue Jahresangabe. Als er seine prophetischen Worte aussprach, war die Zerstörung No-Amons (Theben, die Hauptstadt Oberägyptens) bereits geschehen. Sie fand geschichtlichen Angaben zufolge 663 v.Chr. statt, und zwar unter der Regierung Manasses, des Königs von Juda.
