Es geht uns in diesem Büchlein vor allem um die geistliche und symbolische Bedeutung des Paradiesstromes und des Baumes des Lebens, ohne übrigens der buchstäblichen und historischen Bedeutung Abbruch tun zu wollen. Der Garten Eden, die beiden Bäume und die sprechende Schlange sind zweifellos sinnlich wahrnehmbare Dinge gewesen. Doch es ist auffallend, dass die Bibel nicht nur mit dem Paradies beginnt, sondern auch damit endet. Im letzten Bibelbuch finden wir sozusagen das Gegenstück zum Garten Eden: ein himmlisches Paradies, das Paradies Gottes (Off 2,7).
