Această epistolă a fost scrisă pentru a-l încuraja pe Timotei să slujească într-o zi dificilă, când masele din mărturia creștină îl părăsiseră pe Pavel și învățătura sa. Epistola îi avertizează pe credincioși că stricăciunea din creștinism va progresa și va atinge apogeul în zilele din urmă, când va avea loc o întoarcere completă de la adevărul lui Dumnezeu. Ea prevede o perioadă de declin și cădere completă a mărturiei creștine. În același timp, el trasează cu atenție calea pe care credincioșii o pot urma în astfel de momente.
